Why Many Counsellors Start in Voluntary Roles
Counselling is a career that many people move into later in life. Training typically involves several stages, including foundation courses, a diploma and sometimes a master's degree, with practical components required at each level. Most students continue working in other jobs throughout this process. People drawn to counselling often already work in roles that involve supporting others, such as teaching, nursing, healthcare or social work.
Once qualified, finding paid work can take time. Market saturation, regional job scarcity and strong competition all contribute to the challenge. Many qualified counsellors spend months or longer looking for full time positions. Part time roles exist, but these may not provide a reliable income on their own.
Voluntary counselling offers a way to gain experience, build confidence and contribute to the community while seeking paid employment. It also carries limitations, including the financial pressure of working without pay and the risk that organisations come to rely on unpaid labour rather than creating funded posts.

Describe what a client brings to you and find out which counselling approach is most evidence based for their situation.

Voluntary roles are available across a wide range of settings. These include:
- Charities offering mental health support, such as Mind or local counselling services
- Bereavement organisations like Cruse Bereavement Support
- Helplines run by organisations such as Samaritans
- Services for specific groups, including young people, refugees or older adults
- Specialist areas such as addiction support, eating disorders or domestic abuse
- University and college counselling services
- Workplace wellbeing programmes
Many training courses require students to complete a set number of supervised client hours before qualifying. Voluntary placements often provide these hours, making them a standard part of the training pathway.
Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.
What to Expect from Voluntary Work
Voluntary counselling roles vary considerably. Some organisations ask for a regular weekly commitment, often between four and twelve hours. Others may offer more flexibility. Most will provide supervision, which is a requirement for practising counsellors, though you should confirm this before accepting a placement.
Membership of a professional body such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy or the UK Council for Psychotherapy is not always required for voluntary positions, though many organisations prefer it and it becomes more important when seeking paid work. Insurance is also typically required. Some organisations provide this for their volunteers, while others expect you to arrange your own cover. It is worth noting that some professional bodies include insurance as part of membership.
Voluntary work is unpaid, but many organisations cover travel expenses. The experience gained can strengthen applications for paid positions, and regular supervision helps you develop your skills in a supported environment.
Finding Opportunities
Vacancies for voluntary counsellors are advertised in several places. The BACP website lists some placements, and many local counselling services post openings on their own websites. General volunteering platforms such as Do It and Volunteering Matters also carry listings.
It can help to approach organisations directly, even if they are not actively advertising. Many charities welcome enquiries from qualified or trainee counsellors looking for placements.
When applying, you will usually need to provide evidence of your qualifications, membership of a professional body if held, and any relevant experience. A DBS check is typically required for counselling roles involving vulnerable adults or children, and the organisation will usually arrange this on your behalf.
Voluntary counselling is not a quick route to paid employment, but it offers real experience and the chance to support people who may not otherwise access counselling services. For many counsellors, it forms a valuable part of their early career. Some continue voluntary work alongside paid roles as part of their ongoing professional development and commitment to accessible mental health support.
I hope you are well! My name is Elena and I am currently a Masters student in Psychological Therapies at Queen Mary University of London. This is due to finish in September. I also have a BA in Criminology.
While only 22, I have had a range of jobs: as a private tutor to a 8 year old in maths, at a learning centre for under 16s in English and Maths, dunkin’ donuts shift manager, club bartender where I also worked as a mental health officer, and this past year alongside my Masters I have worked as a social interviewer interviewing randomly selected households on a range of social policy issues. This next year, I will be working with children with autism and SEN.
Volunteering wise, I have mentoring experience (from when I was in secondary school and sixth form). Also, I used to volunteer with the New Bridge foundation where I was pen pals with individuals in prison during COVID. This past half a year I have been volunteering with SHOUT (a mental health crisis hotline. Further, more recently, I completed a three week work experience at a family and child’s therapist private practice.
I want to be a family and couples therapist, and my next step in April will be applying for the Family and Coupes masters. This is actually what led me to contact you guys today.
I found your website while I was searching for more volunteering that I could do to help my ongoing personal development and decided to send you an email to inquire into whether you have any openings available for volunteering.
Please let me know if you would like me to send over anything else, like a CV etc. I also speak perfect English and Bulgarian.
I look forward to hearing from you!
I’d be grateful if you would advise who I should email.
Many thanks.
Many thanks.
1961 - born 24th June 1961 before I was placed up for adoption through the Catholic Children's Rescue Society and was adopted by my late parents, Robert and Genevieve Whittle of Burnley, Lancashire.
1964 - my adoptive late brother was also adopted through the Catholic Children's Rescue Society and became part of our family.
1965 - I started on my educational journey at
St John the Baptist RC Infant and Junior School, undoubtedly the happiest time in my life.
1972 onwards - things started to go wrong with continued bullying, fear, hurt, pain and not being listened to. The downward spiral continued unabated and probably the start of my own mental health issues and problems. The only plausible comfort was overeating and eventually addiction to alcohol. As time went by I failed at school and could not hold on to a regular job.
1989 - MY FIRST FIGHT FOR LIFE. If I mention the date of Saturday 15th of April 1989 and the place, Hillsborough, Sheffield, and Britain's worst ever sporting disaster, you will clearly know the intense trauma and horrific total of 97 deaths that happened in front of me, hundreds like me, injured and thousands traumatised. The day that started my own dark battle with PTSD
1994 - Some five years on from Hillsborough,
still unable to cope or control the anger, rage and resentment, as well as the endless nightmares, flashbacks, panic attacks, screaming and crying, and paranoia, low self esteem and zero confidence, coupled with huge amounts of alcohol, really life could not possibly get any worse now could it? Yet, it did. The death of my younger brother, Anthony, a Paranoid Schizophrenic, who escaped from a 'secure' psychiatric unit before falling to his death. Another INJUSTICE just like Hillsborough that I am STILL fighting with.
2O05/06 - Despite all of this hell, I started to find some positives in my life. I went to college and completed several courses, before successfully applying for a place at the University of Central Lancashire and completing a Combined Honours degree in Education with History. A year later, my marriage to my amazing wife, Deborah. We are still together some 17 years later
2013 - A very bittersweet year. After caring and supporting my terminally ill father through Cancer, he left us in November, a short three weeks later, this was tempered by the birth of my first Granddaughter, Monica Rose. Since birth, I have looked after her diligently and without favo

Im investigate where I can volunteer as a trainee counsellor.
I would like to gain experience whilst having the opportunity to provide counselling, around the South East, central London area,
building my skills and hopefully getting guidance and support.
Could you suggest where to start for someone who has not done voluntary work as yet?
Thank you so much in advance..
Since I began my therapist journey the BABCP have encouraged an accreditation process which has been a hinderance to my job opportunities. Although accreditation is not a requirement to practice, many organisations like NHS are reluctant to employ therapists without it.
My previous employment was mainly around substance misuse which I have great knowledge of (20 years). I am now working towards my accreditation and hope to volunteer with the NHS whilst doing so.
I already volunteer with a suicide intervention charity which I love but would like to expand my knowledge in a more clinical setting within the NHS. I am a hard working and loyal employee with high ethical standards.
I’ve completed an introduction to counselling and gained a distinction on the level 3 counselling course. I was accepted onto a foundation degree which I started for one term but my mother passed away so I had to defer the course. I have a place to start the foundation course again in September 2023. In the meantime I’m looking for some valuable voluntary counselling experience where I might be able to use my counselling skills at level 3 standard. I live just outside Bristol where I’m looking for a voluntary part time placement.
Many thanks
Michelle
I would like to volunteer my services talking on the phone or video link to try and help people gain knowledge and strategies to build their own toolbox of self help equipment.
I have completed courses in Thought field therapy, emotional freedom technique, CBT and NLP.
I feel most confident with TFT, EFT and CBT.
I have also completed courses on self harm and suicide but this was a while ago
Thanks. Hope to hear from you soon
I’m currently studying my psychology undergraduate degree; I have just over a year (part time) until I finish. While I’m not yet qualified to begin counselling, which is my intention while I’m pursuing post grad towards becoming a clinical psychologist, I would love to be able to use the knowledge and skills I have to support others. Having the opportunity to grow my skills and also support other humans in need is incredibly important to me. I would love to volunteer for a roll within an organisation that makes counselling accessible.
.
Warm regards
Rob

I started my counsellor training in 1998. I continued my training up to Adv. Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (CPCAB) in December 2003.
Once I had completed my training & all my voluntary hours, I went on to work as a practising counsellor until 2006. However, I did continue with some voluntary work with Age Concern & The Carers Centre (The princess Royal Trust).
My counselling services went better than I could have imagined from 2003 – 2006. I worked for the Youth Service (Open Door), provided counselling to counsellors in training & my own private clients. I provided services to individual, couples & telephone counselling.
In 2002 I had started another business venture that also grew to become a full-time job. It was in 2006 that I had to make the decision between my two careers. I chose the entertainment business due to the earning potential instead of following the career that I was most passionate about.
During this time, I had a young family & had gone through a divorce. Money & a steady income was the driving force behind my decision. I do not regret my decision as I always knew that one day, when the time was right, I would return to the job I felt ended to prematurely.
Any assistance in helping me in following the correct path back to my counselling career.
I appreciate that things change & I by know means expect to just pick up where I left off.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I have completed my Certificate of Counselling and aim to study my Diploma in Child Counselling.
I am interested to develop my Career in Counselling.
I would like to gain experience and skills as a Volunteer to have the understanding for this Career.

I would be greatly if I was been given the opportunity to work as a Volunteer to gain knowledge for this Practice Training.
Thank You

Since I was young I have always being interested in becoming a counsellor or therapist, and after having counselling in Sixth form, I am certain that I want a career in counselling. However, I do not have much experience of working with people. I’m looking for advice on available work experience placement or volunteer roles that are helpful for me to gain the necessary skills and experience to aid my process in becoming a counsellor. In September I am going to be entering my final year of college.
I’m a mature student who lives in Lancashire ( just outside Blackpool), and am soon to graduate with a B.A (Hons) in Education and Professional Studies.
I am hoping to study at post grad level in Counselling and Psychotherapy skills commencing in September on a part time basis. I’m interested in finding out if there are any voluntary placements available working with children and adolescents in my area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I am hoping to commence L4, cpcab in September, looking for volunteer opportunities for the summer and a placement for 2020.
I’m hoping to gain experience within adolescent and adult person centred counselling.
I live in Berkshire,
Any suggestions would be great, thank you.
I live in Birmingham and I will be a mature student. Thanks
I'm a level 4 Diploma Counselling student at the Leeds city college. I'm in my final year.

I can only say how sorry I am that you weren't given better guidance and support with your choices. Have you thought about e.g. The Samaritans, as a place where you can use your training to date and hopefully build towards the "right" course? Many of the great schools (e.g. The New School- existential, founded by the wonderful Emmy van Deurzen, Regent's University's School of Psychotherapy - also founded by Emmy, and then led by the brilliant Ernesto Spinelli), have bursaries and grants to help the low income and unwanted applicants who want to study for the MA. They are also flexible if you've got great experience with regard to entrance requirements.
You are so right about the "Jack of all trades" approach...I have been studying the integrative approach this term, and we can see how easy it would be to "learn the techniques checklist" and just throw in stuff, without having a truly integrated theoretical understanding which then gets applied "in the room" with the client. A friend told me a howlingly funny story about her therapist announcing "this week we shall do Gestalt. Let me explain how 'the empty chair' works." Talk about cherry-picking! I told her to run away from that therapist ASAP!
Good luck with progressing your career and your learning.
UKCP is the highest level organisation for properly trained and experienced therapists- as well as a Master's degree in Psychotherapy, you must also have then undertaken a further two year Advanced Diploma in a specialism/ specific school of psychotherapeutic theoretical approach.
Additionally, to be a UKCP- registered therapist, you must remain in Supervision for your entire career as a therapist, to ensure that your supervisor (who will be a senior, highly experienced UKCP-registered psychotherapist who has done additional specialist training in supervising other therapists) is available to support and challenge you about your dealings with your clients.
Finally, after all this, you have to clock up 450 hours of actual therapy sessions with clients to register.
I'll be honest- some of you are following a dangerous path in thinking that lower-level diplomas which lack:
(i) the academic theoretical rigour; and
(I) the Skills training (so that you're fit to get a placement); and
(iii) the emotionally demanding work of personal psychotherapy;
are safe for your potential clients. If you don't grasp everything from Freud to Yalom, Rogers to Jung and back again (via Nietzsche and Heidegger for all the Existentialist theory and practice), and deal with your own issues and develop meaningful skills, then you are basically messing about with people's minds and emotional well-being while having not much of a clue about what you are really doing.
Even with all that UKCP- focused training, support and personal therapy, we all start out feeling as though we know so little.
I'd really urge many of you to consider these points and issues with integrity and open-mindedness. My lecturers and tutors have been deeply humble individuals but with vast training and complex experience of practising as therapists with the everyday issues and issues of severe trauma. One of them likened these diplomas as being akin to letting a healthcare assistant perform open heart surgery. Not fair on the assistant or on the patient. But at least the healthcare assistant would know that he or she was out of their depth.
I am a second year student on a Diploma course.
I live in Surrey and have access to London.
I am looking for a trainee counselling placement.
Has anyone got any ideas?
I have been looking since October.
I have vast experience supporting people, clinically and emotionally.
I would love to have a placement with you to further my training please.
Thank you
Sam
Please could you send me some information on positions in the Inverness/ Highlands area of Scotland

Is there anything I can do with this experience ? I am struggling to find a job ? & have no concrete idea what my plans are for the future ?

I am looking to change my career and train to become a CBT therapist. I have a degree - although it is not directly related to CBT/psychology/mental health - but I do have experience tutoring young people with mental health problems in probation/prisons and pupil referal units. I am looking to do a 1 year full-time MA course in CBT in Sept 2016 - but I know I need to be working in the NHS/psychological field to do this. I was wondering if I would be able to get a local volunteer placement to help me complete my studies and give me the experience I need? Any advice is welcomed.

I an currently in my second year as a student counsellor , I am training with Chrysalis and I am trying to find somewhere to do some voluntary practise hours(or anything really that will give me experience) so that I can gain as much experience as possible. I have contacted the local Mind charity but despite filling in an application some months ago and a few calls to see how things are progressing I am no further forward and wondered if you have any advice or ideas where else I can try. I did make enquiries with the schools counselling charity Place 2b but they have nothing in this area. I'm really struggling to find anything so any ideas would be welcome.

I will be studying in York and currently live in East Yorkshire and am looking for a Counselling placement in this area. I have applied to several organisations however they only accept second year students. At the moment I feel like I have applied to every organisation in my area that offers such placements only to be turned away.
I am wondering if anyone knows of anywhere in my area: York / Scarborough / Malton / Hull that offers Counselling Placements to first year Diploma Students.
I'm not sure where to start looking!
I've got a Diploma in Psychology and intend to keep my studies. Probably OU (Open University) Psychology with Counselling. At the moment I am working as Social Worker, however i feel that it still is not my place.
I like counselling area, (listening people, support them with some advice and action plan, but I know that when I finish my degree I still will not be a counselor, because i need gain same experiences for it.
What should I do? Back to Uni (OU) and finish my degree in psychology with counselling and parallel to it I find a placement or another course that allow me o get placement? or Can I get a placement now while i finish my degree?
Anyway... any help (suggestions) will be welcome!

Have you thought of volunteering for the Samaritans? If you apply via its website, your nearest branch will get in touch and invite you to an information evening where you can talk to people from your area who already volunteer - giving you the chance to find out what it is really like. You can call them on 08705 62 72 82.
The RNIB, also occasionally advertises for volunteers and has offices based in central Warrington, with counselling taking place in venues across the Warrington and Cheshire area. They look for volunteer counsellors to support people whose lives are affected by sight loss, whether they are blind and partially sighted themselves, or a family member or carer of someone with sight loss.
Wishing you the best of luck in your career.
Could you please inform me how do I apply for voluntry counselling post?

I have found this site really interesting. I am just about to complete my level 2 counsellig skills course and am amazed at how much I have learnt.
Im now looking at how to develop further and want to do the level 3 later this year along side some volunteering. I looked at the OU equivalent course and wondered if that would be a good route to take as it would enable me to get onto the level 4 sooner. Any one got any views on this?
This site is brilliant and I will be refering to it all the time nowthat I have found it.
